Happy International Women's Day! We celebrate IWD Happy International Women's Day!

We celebrate IWD every day: in the stories we choose to tell, the teams we build, the collaborations we make, the partnerships and relationships we foster...the holistic approach to producing art that ignites imaginations, provokes conversations across platforms, and contributes to growing Africa's creative and cultural industries ecosystem.

2022 ended on two high notes...

First, it was @gamesweekafrica in Cape Town where @nyambura_mw curated and supported @gamesforchangeafrica sessions. And who can forget the phenomenal conversation with @lesleydw, CEO of @tshimologongprecinct on building legacy through games.

And our special moment at @igdahq Pathfindings conference where we showcased The Ground Screams To Whisper, our flagship extended reality project, an ONSIDE gaming grantee.

It was a magical year 🪄🚀💃🏾

#MagicMakerAllWeek is coming to you from Cape Town #MagicMakerAllWeek is coming to you from Cape Town 🇿🇦

And our #magicmakers are the directors of documentary film, Ampe (@ampestudyfilm), Claudia Owusu (@lookingfornanayaa) and Ife Oluwamuyide (@ifoluwa_ ) 🇬🇭🇺🇲

Set in the sister cities of Accra, Ghana and Columbus, Ohio, “Ampe: Leap into the Sky, Black Girl” is a rhythmic love letter to Black girlhood across the African diaspora. Through the lens of the Ghanaian traditional jumping and clapping game, Ampe, the film takes us on a journey of sisterhood, loyalty, and nostalgia in a space created for us, by us.💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾

We are excited to invite Ampe as an integral part of @gamesforchangeafrica @gamesweekafrica programming to inspire the conversations about games, and most importantly play.

The @gamesforchangeafrica programming was co-created with @nyambura_mw as curatorial lead in collaboration with some amazing people in African game development, design, and social impact to co-create an exceptional programme for #G4CA2022. @craftajune @marlonrlabs @sam_pottinger @sultanwalid @deangichukie @kuntacontent @letiarts @nicolebiondi1

How did this come together?...

When @nyambura_mw was co-curating the 10th anniversary edition @filmafrica in 2022, she was delighted to programme Ampe and this led to showcasing the film at @gamesforchangeafrica @gamesweekafrica

All this came together because of our commitment to #communitybuilding #collaborations.

At @akoiaco, we are dedicated to creative and innovative ways to curate and produce experiences at the intersection of art and tech for impactful and transformative storytelling.

So #ComePlay with us at @gamesforchangeafrica @gamesweekafrica because "...The curation of G4CA 2022 centres our prolific African storytelling formats, both ancient and contemporary, provoking and inspiring us to imagine our play in radical and affirming ways..." - Nyambura M. Waruingi

We will be posting content all week showcasing the different delegates.

Join us for this #MagicMakerAllWeek from Cape Town 🇿🇦

#GratitudeSunday 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Today, #GratitudeSunday 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Today, here at @akoiaco we are grateful about #communitybuilding. 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾

We connected with @xrwomenglobal in 2020. In the thick of the pandemic. Everything was closed down and locked down. It felt bleak business-wise and creatively.

Still, @xrwomenglobal was dedicated to running community meetings on @immersiveilrn. So, we pitched up, not knowing what was going to come out of this.

The experience was phenomenal! Finding a community of women in #XR #VR #AR and everything in between and beyond was a dream come true. 🚀🚀🚀

Our mantra #imagineradically was put to task and we learnt to pivot in ways we hadn't contemplated.

To date, every Wednesday evening EAT we have met up and been inspired by the women who have presented, fostered and nurtured our community.

As the company, we have hosted #immersivejuakali events to showcase the diverse and enriching work of women on the continent with @tulananabohela @shmerah_passchier #moratiwamolema @kumechibsa @makari._ @bunakoodao. All have contributed to expanding our ideas of what is possible in the space. 🛸🛸🛸

We have been invigorated from hearing about the use-cases elaborated on by women from around the world.

Most importantly, WE.HAVE.DANCED!!! (with legs 😂😂😂)

We are grateful, honoured and privileged to be part of @xrwomenglobal community.

Go on, join us and follow @xrwomenglobal and believe in building communities wherever you are because it enriches the experience of the work and, honestly, brings you sanity.

#GratitudeSunday🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Many thi #GratitudeSunday🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Many things that we are feeling blessed and excited about here at Akoia.

With closing the #DSL journey in July 2022, a hiatus was necessary to map the way forward and ensure that the projects we collaborate on, produce, and develop remain innovative, eclectic, and engaging.

The heart of Akoia is bold storytelling, cross-platform distribution, and immersive tech. We draw inspiration at the intersection of various artistic disciplines. It is at this nexus that the deliciousness occurs. And keeps this creative enterprise booked, producing, and evolving 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾

Our happy places are public heritage and artistic institutions. Yes, you guessed it right: African museums always and forever. And during our hiatus, @nyambura_mw visited the Ethnological Museum in Addis and beat a picture of an infamous desk. Can you guess who's it is?

The rest, the pause, the break was important. To create space to refresh the imagination is integral to keep the work not only relevant but bold, provocative, revolutionary. The space to think through the necessary questions of process is integral to art and its production across formats and platforms.

And we don't do it alone. Partnerships are pivotal to our success and, most importantly, our artistic growth, therefore, excellence.

During our rest period, we also took on creative development pursuits and speaking engagements that were rooted in reflection on our projects so far and our imagining for the future #imagineradically

We played, we experimented, we were inspired. (And, got to shoot something special that we can't wait to announce. Haki, it better go on air🤞🏾)

This week we launch, after a long time #MagicMakerAllWeek to catch you up on what we have been up to and show you where we'd love to go.

So, #MagicMakers thank you for all the follows and engagements for the past months. We truly appreciate it!

And #ComePlay with us this week!

As we say goodbye but not for too long, meet the DSL producers.

In Coventry, Harmeet Chagger-Khan, Creative Director at Surfing Light Beams and DSL Programme Lead for @thespacearts. She was the Lead Producer and designed the DSL programme in partnership with the British Council and The Coventry UK City of Culture.

And, in Nairobi, our Creative Director and Founder @nyambura_mw, Producer for @eastafricaarts. Her focus was on sharing her transdisciplinary experience in working with film, visual arts, and immersive storytelling:

“ I wanted the participants to learn the strength of good storytelling and especially when it comes to immersive and interactive media, it all starts with the story and then you move on to figuring out how to use the immersive and interactive tools to best tell that story.” Nyambura said when reflecting on the DSL Project.

Across continents over the internet, Harmeet and Nyambura mentored and coached the 10 young creatives who participated in DSL both in Nairobi and Coventry: @Millan_Tarus, Tracy Mwaura(@Mic_rookie), @Mike_Khakame, @AnaloKanga, Naserian Koikai and Precious Narotso (@pndraws), @JamesGrubbmedia, @Lanaire_Aderemi, @DemyJozeph and @MichaelMihoc2001.

As part of DSL, the young creatives from Nairobi and Coventry created two pieces ‘Now That I Know Things’ a spatial audio experience and ‘Our Daily Bread’ an interactive short film.

BBC MarkerBox tools were used to produce the interactive and immersive stories. 'Now That I Know Things' and 'Our Daily Bread' are both available on the BBC Taster website (LINK IN BIO).

It's our honour to share with you #magicmakers that The Ground Screams To Whisper was selected by the @newimages.festival to participate in the XR Development Market. And, we are proud to be part of a revolutionary cohort: Feminism Is The New Change 🚀🛸🤖

The Ground Screams To Whisper is a trans-media XR experience about the resilience, courage, and triumph of being a female freedom fighter, re-living their often-erased stories, which shaped Kenya’s independence struggle.

Inspired by Afro-gothic motifs and drawing from Eastern African cosmologies, #GSTW merges our world of the living with that of our ancestors. This is an immersive experience that invites us to heal our lineages and embrace freedom.

The #GSTWjourney began at @artizen_fund as a 10-minute idea pitch, evolved to a 5-minute story pitch at @dokleipzig, and now earned a place at the @newimages.festival XR Development Market. We are looking forward to more opportunities for collaboration and financing.

As @nyambura_mw, our Founder and Creative Director, takes on various pitch meetings with potential distributors and consultant producers, she has stressed to us the importance of Akoia's mantra: #ImagineRadically

We want to thank our collaborators for taking this development journey with us. We are grateful for your continued support:
@museumofbc

@wakaagency

The #GSTW evolution is going to take time and we will keep you all #magicmakers posted as we continue down this path through development to production and finally, the showcase.

Still excited 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
